Thrillers all round was the story for the Torrens Valley grand finals The A grade was a draw, one decided by 1 game, one by 7 games, and another by 2 sets.
On a perfect day for tennis Kersbrook hosted the senior grand finals, all three grades were extremely close and exciting matches with the A grade resulting in a draw between Springton and Mt Pleasant Blue. Under association rules, as the higher ranked team the premiership was awarded to Springton. Mt Pleasant Blue started really well winning all the doubles. Matt Schulz and Michael Noack played a great set against Sam Beeson and Kane Rawlings to win 6-3 after a slow start in the second Tim Bubner and Chad Frazer had a good 6-2 win over Mick and Nikki Rawlings, while the third saw Annalise Noack and Lauren Schulz too good for Geoff Leane and Gabbi Roesler. The singles seemed to be going the same way, Tim Bubner too good for Mick Rawlings to give the Blues a 4-set lead. Springton however had other ideas. Both Leane and Roesler turned their doubles results around both winning 6-4. Beeson and Schulz had a very entertaining number 1 single with Beeson winning 6-4 Kane Rawlings too good for Michael Noack 6-1 in the second. In what turned out to be the crucial set Nikki Rawlings recovered from 2-5 to force a tie break before eventually going down to Frazer but the games would prove to be the difference in the end. Mt Pleasant Blue had a slender 5-4 lead into the reverse double which were all 6-1 with Springton winning 2 of them to force the draw and claim the premiership as the higher ranked team leading into the match.
The B grade was also a really high standard match. Birdwood out to improve on their last match against Gumeracha got off to the perfect start winning the first and third doubles. Luke Markey and Tobias Carpenter too good for Lachie Carpenter and Cam Smart 6-2. Luke Payne and Jess Scott got the third 6-3 over Ashton Gladigau and Tayla Wellman. The two Coopers, Gladigau and Weinert put Gum on the board with a 6-3 win over Jara Skelener and Natalie Carpenter Gumeracha fought back in the singles, winning four of the sets. Wins to Smart in a lengthy match over Tobias Carpenter, Cooper Gladigau and Cooper Weinert both had good wins as did Tayal Wellman at number 6. For Birdwood Markey too good for Carpenter and Payne defeating A Gladigau at 5. Gumeracha sealed the day winning two of the reverse doubles.
In another nailbiter minor premier Birdwood got the fright of their lives in the C grade with Charleston racing to a 6 set to 3 lead after the singles and a handy game lead. Daniel Smith and Brad Randal put Birdwood on the board first in the top double winning 6-2 over Damon Green and Michael Wilson. Charleston then won two marathon tie breaks in the second and third. Green then defeated Smith in the top single to set his side up. Further wins to Alyssa Fox at 5 and Matt Hughes at 3and Hannah Cox at six and things were bleak for Birdwood. However, they never gave in, Brad Randall and Lauren Georgiou both won crucial set 7-5 over Michael Wilson and Josh Custance respectively. In the reverse doubles it was all Birdwood winning all three and only dropping 5 games to sneak home by the narrowest of margins 1 game.
The Junior B match at Gumeracha in the morning also a thriller, Harrogate got the jump early on Cudlee Creek winning both doubles. Cohen O’Shea and Jaxon White defeating Julian Moradiellos and Harry Chung 6-4 as did Jaime Gordon and Niamh Burgoyne over Linda and Eva Kanberga. Cudlee Creek however kicked into gear in the singles winning three of the four with strong wins to Chung, Linda Kanberga and Amy Adams. Cohen O’Shea was the winner for Harrogate at number one. Cudlee Creek getting home by 7 games.
It was a great way to finish the season with such exciting and entertaining tennis. At the senior presentations President Nick Seager presented past secretary Bradley Green with a life membership for his many years of service to the association.
