Birdwood hung on in a thriller against rivals Gumeracha to take second spot on the ladder
by 7 games. In a close contest Birdwood hosted Gumeracha and dominated the double
matches winning four of the six sets, however, not to be outdone Gumeracha reversed this
in the singles. Luke Markey and Tobias Carpenter got the hosts off to a strong start winning
the top set 6-2 as did Lauren Georgiou and Mark Cortolezzis in the third. Joe Elkington and
Dylan Rowe kept Gumeracha in it winning the second 6-3. Gumeracha then surged ahead in
the single, the top set a ripper with Lachie Carpenter inflicting a rare defeat on Luke Markey
winning 6-4. Dylan Rowe hung on in a tiebreak over Beth Viner Smith, with Heather Cook
and Tayla Wellman Gumeracha’s other winners. Birdwood’s Tobias and Natalie Carpenter
both won their sets 7-5 and 6-3 respectively. Needing something big after the break
Birdwood delivered winning the top two reverse doubles comfortably before dropping the
third to take the day by 7 games.
Harrogate hosted Springton in another close contest. Once again Springton’s doubles
dominance was the difference. Springton started well winning the top two doubles with
wins to Sam Beeson and Nikki Rawlings in the top set and to Isaac Garcia and Ryan Press in
the second. Harrogate’s Abbey White and Corinne O’Shea won the third. The singles were
shared at three sets each with Sam Beeson, Nikki Rawlings and Ali Roberts all having strong
6-0 wins for Springton, while for Harrogate Shannon and Cohen O’Shea along with Abbey
White won their sets. Springton won two of the reverse doubles to take the honours and
hold fourth spot on the ladder.
Kersbrook Blue way too strong for Kersbrook in the local derby winning 11 sets to 1.
Kersbrook’s only Joy through Dave Cottrell defeating veteran John MacDonald in a close 7-5
number 2 single. For the Blues Mitchell MacDonald made a welcome return from injury to
play his first of the season.
C grade matches saw both top teams have wins. Mt Torrens had to work hard for their win
defeating a gallant Cudlee Creek seven sets to five at home, while at Mt Pleasant Woodside
came home strongly to notch up the win eight sets to four. Things were very close going into
the reverse doubles; however, Woodside won all three easily to hold onto top spot. Fourth
spot will be decided next week by the winner of Gumeracha and Mt Pleasant. Mt Pleasant
must win to retain fourth, a loss will see them slip out on percentage to Cudlee Creek who
have the bye and will be watching on in anticipation.
Cudlee Creek remain undefeated with a good win over Kersbrook Blue in the Junior Bs.
While Mt Pleasant had a win against Kersbrook. The improvement of the players over the
season is evident in the set scores getting closer each week. In the D grade Harrogate’s good
season continues with a win over Mt Pleasant, while Mt Pleasant Blue had a close win over
Birdwood who have been the big improvers.
