Two of the finals were decided by just one game. The juniors got to play just before the rain hit. In the C grade Harrogate upset highly fancied Cudlee Creek by a single game. It was a match played in two halves with Cudlee Creek winning the sets from the 1 & 2 players while Harrogate took the sets from the 3 & 4 players. Fortunately for them it was enough to get home. B grade was also close with the 2 Mt Pleasant teams facing off, again an upset with Mt Pleasant Blue coming from third to defeat the top placed Mt Pleasant by 4 sets to 2. In the A grade Kersbrook finished an outstanding season to remain undefeated by securing a 5 sets to 0 win against Cudlee Creek with the last set being abandoned as the rain hit. After a reasonable rain delay the senior matches started an hour late. Springton got off to a flyer against Mt Pleasant winning the 3 doubles. Samuel Beeson and Kane Rawlings too good for Danny McMahon and Nick Seager winning 6-2, as did Rick Rodigheiro and Heidi Roesler over the Seager sisters. Mick and Nikki Rawlings had a hard earned 6-4 win over Jordon Barker and Alistair Seager. The singles were even at 3 apiece. Down1-4 McMahon fought back to defeat Beeson 6-4. The next closes set was a 6-2 win to Tricia Owen over Roesler at number 6. Kane Rawlings too good for Seager winning 6-1, Mick Rawlings went down to Barker 1-6, Nikki Rawlings and Rodigheiro both winning 6-0. Mt Pleasant won 2 of the reverse doubles but it wasn’t enough, going down 7 sets to 5. Charleston headed out to Kersbrook with eager anticipation to play kersbrook in the C grade grand final. Welcomed by rain things weren't looking too good, but with time the rain passed and sky's began to clear with some sun breaking through and after a thorough cleaning of courts play was under way. Charleston claimed the opening doubles sets 2-1. Wayde Newman/ Jason Denham getting the job done against Jackson Grovermann/Michael Westley 6-3 with some very handy tennis and good play. Damon Green/ Ashley Sneesby paired up very well to get the handy 6-2 win over John MacDonald/ Steve Neindorf with some good rallies. Kersbrook snagged a set back through Tiarna Grovermann/Caitlin Westley with a hard fought 6-4 win over Judy Clarke/ Mel Toyer. The singles sets were split 3 a piece with very similar results. Newman stamped his dominance with a crushing 6-0 demolitian job of J.Grovermann in a great display. M.Westley got a crushing 6-0 result over Denham who threw everything at his opponent but just couldn't match him. MacDonald played at his solid best to get past a gallant hard fighting Green 6-1 . Sneesby played an absolute blinder to get the 6-2 win over Neindorf in a good hard match with plenty of rallies. T.Grovermann fought hard to get the 6-4 win over Clarke. Toyer played out of her skin to get the 6-4 win over C.Westley with great confidence and self belief. With the day still up for grabs for either team Charleston held a narrow 5-4 lead but Kersbrook would soon change that , winning the reverse doubles sets 2-1. All 3 sets were exact 6-3 results. Kersbrook wins came from M.Westley/T.Grovermann who were too strong for Denham/Clarke winning 6-3 in a good match. Macdonald/C.Westley just too good for Green/Toyer with a 6-3 result . Set of the day could have gone to a few great games but it was the final set that would win the day for Charleston. Newman/ and sub in Custance got off to a great start winning the 1st game in pretty quick time looked the goods, but then lost the next 3 and looked in strife. To their credit though they held some crucial service games and won 5 games in a row including the last where Newman served it out in a thriller giving Charleston the 6-3 win. Charleston winning the day and Championship on the narrowest of margins 6 sets 51 games to Kersbrook 6 sets 50 games . Giving the team the premiership after last winning in 2012/13. |
